END EATING DISORDERS

END DISCRIMINATION FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY EATING DISORDERS, BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO LIVE

WELCOME TO #DUMPTHESCALES MOVEMENT

The last few years have seen a huge rise in the number of people struggling with eating disorders. Despite this well-documented increase and the high mortality risks, eating disorders remain inadequately addressed with long waiting times particularly for young adults and limited evidence-based treatments in many areas of the country. This is despite the fact that the UK has led the way in developing many of these treatments.

Eating disorders are often stigmatised and misunderstood as lifestyle choices affecting only a specific demographic, leading to the severe underfunding of adult services. In truth, eating disorders impact individuals of all ages, sizes, genders, and ethnicities. Since 2022, this disturbing misunderstanding has grown, with more people being denied treatment, considered too complex, or seen as lacking motivation to be helped. Alarmingly, some are being placed on palliative care pathways, which contradicts all good practice guidelines. Eating disorders are fully treatable with the right therapeutic and nutritional support.

WHO WE ARE

For too long eating disorders have been dismissed and stigmatised. They have faced decades of underfunding, stigma, and neglect. With the growing number of diagnoses and more people being labelled as untreatable or ‘treatment-resistant’, we have decided that enough is enough.

This campaign is for anybody and everybody who cares about eating disorders and wants to change the way they are treated, as well as the stigmas, stereotypes and judgments often associated with them.

We are a diverse group of carers, clinicians, researchers and individuals with lived experience, all united by a shared mission to end the injustices faced by those affected by eating disorders.

We collaborate with other eating disorder charities, work closely with the government, and engage with MPs across all political parties to advocate for meaningful reforms.

Together, we strive to create a more inclusive, supportive, accessible and compassionate world for everyone affected by eating disorders.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT?

We are asking people to take videos of themselves saying, ‘end the discrimination for those affected by eating disorders because everyone has the right to live’, and we would love to have your support with this. The videos will be played across social media, mainstream media, at football stadiums, in universities, in Parliament and at key public events. Send us an email if you'd like to take part.

You can also follow us on social media, attend our online and in person events, use our downloadable templates to write to your MP/school/GP and/or make a donation to support the campaign.

OUR SUPPORTERS

Our dedicated supporters play a crucial role in helping us further the impact and reach of our mission. Together, we work towards fighting for change for all who are suffering from eating disorders.
